Washington, D.C. – Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Thursday regarding the Majority Leader’s claim that the war in Iraq ‘is lost’:

“I can’t begin to imagine how our troops in the field, who are risking their lives every day, are going to react when they get back to base and hear that the Democrat Leader of the United States Senate has declared the war is lost. I can’t begin to imagine what their families will think. Surely this isn’t the consensus position of Senate Democrats.

“If the war is already lost, if it is already time to declare defeat, then why wait another year to do it? Why not simply vote against funding now? Why would anyone ask American soldiers to stick it out for another year if they think the battle is already over?

“If Democrats want to end this war, they should vote against funding it. That would clearly end the war. But that is not what is going to happen. They will wait another year. They will supply and equip our soldiers to fight a war they think they have already lost.”

Washington, DC -- U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement on the Senate floor today on the 2007 National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance Ceremony:

"At today’s 2007 National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance ceremony, I will have the honor of lighting a candle alongside Holocaust survivor Eva Cooper. Eva was 10 years old when Nazis invaded her home town of Budapest. She survived in hiding until Soviet forces liberated her and her family in 1945.

"Hearing stories like Eva’s reminds us that the Holocaust was not one act of evil, but millions—an evil that slaughtered little children and horrified nations. Today, we remember evil, and the strength and courage of those who lived under its dark reign.

"As time marches ever forward, fewer survivors like Eva Cooper still live to tell us firsthand of the horrors they saw. That is why the mission of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the hosts of today’s event, is so important. History must never forget the horror committed against the Jewish people, so that horror of such magnitude can never happen again.

"Today’s ceremony also served to remind us of the strength of the Jewish people in the face of atrocity. The resilience of those who survived, and the determination of those who remember, is proof that the dignity of the human soul will never be trampled by oppression, injustice and terror."

“Today the Senate protected healthcare access for tens of millions of seniors”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell released the following statement on Wednesday regarding legislation to allow government price-fixing for Medicare prescription drugs. Cloture was not invoked by a vote of 55-42.

“This bill is flawed and does nothing to provide our seniors with more benefits for less money. I’ve never seen the government take a program from the private sector and deliver it more efficiently and at a lower cost. Today the Senate protected healthcare access for tens of millions of seniors as well as price negotiations to ensure they pay the least amount of money for the prescription drugs they need.”
