WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Friday after Iraqi citizen, Waad Ramadan Alwan, pleaded guilty to federal terrorism charges in Kentucky:

“Today’s plea of guilt by Alwan, who boasted of killing US troops in a warzone overseas, and bragged that his ‘lunch and dinner would be an American’, confirms that he was a combatant who was associated with enemy forces overseas.  The military should have had custody of him to begin with for purposes of intelligence, detention and punishment.”

‘So I would suggest that here’s a rare opportunity to do something truly positive together here at the end of the year. Let’s finish this year out on a bipartisan note. Let’s strengthen our nation’s energy security, decrease the energy we import from overseas, create American jobs now, and let’s do it all on a bipartisan basis. There’s bipartisan support for this project. Let’s get it done.’
‘For too long, the politics of the moment or of the next election has been put ahead of Congress’ responsibility to balance the books. Too many promises have been made that can’t possibly be kept. And now, the time for serious action has come. We must prevent what’s happening in Europe from happening here. And that’s just what our Balanced Budget Amendment would do.’
