Hunting, Fishing & the Outdoors

I grew up in Brainerd, Minnesota, in the heart of Minnesota's lake country. Along with my brother, Jim, and sister, Mary Pat, I began my lifelong enjoyment of hunting, fishing and the outdoors at an early age. The Nolan homestead in rural Crosby is now a regular gathering place for 5 generations of Nolans who together tap maple syrup in spring, harvest wild rice in the fall, and never miss a hunting or fishing opener.

As a gun owner and hunter, and a member of the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, I work to pass legislation in the House of Representatives that protects the rights of responsible gun owners, preserves wildlife habitat for recreation, and supports hunting and fishing on federal lands.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is America's best tool for providing public access to outdoor recreation, protecting our forests, wildlife, and our rivers and lakes, benefitting all of us. This 50-year program reached its deadline on Sept. 30 and, for the first time ever, Congress let it pass without reauthorizing LWCF.

In the 1960s, our nation vigorously debated the pros and cons of offshore oil and gas drilling. Industry arguments favored offshore drilling as a way to reduce our dependency on imported energy. Opponents argued that any spills could be catastrophic. Industry proponents won the debate, and we’ve been drilling offshore ever since.

If you’re running for political office in America, camo is a good look. If a candidate can pull it off, it communicates that he or she is humble, earthy, in touch with the spirit of Real America. And if you can’t pull it off, you’re bumbling, a city slicker, an instant punchline — ask John Kerry.
