To prevent a pending expiration of foreclosure protection for military homeowners, Representatives Stephen Fincher (TN-8) and Denny Heck (WA-10) today introduced the Stability for Servicemembers Act. Existing law currently protects servicemembers from foreclosure for one year after they leave active duty, but the law is set to expire at the end of this year.

Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia allow legal marijuana access in some form, with legislatures in Ohio and Pennsylvania approving medical marijuana in 2016. Full legalization measures are polling well in California and Nevada. Nationwide, a majority of Americans now support tossing out the drug-war ban on cannabis.

All eight Democrats in Washington state's congressional delegation were among dozens of House and Senate Democrats who staged a sit-in on the House floor on Wednesday to demand a vote on gun control legislation.
The lawmakers sat on the floor and refused to allow Republicans to take back control. They took turns talking about gun violence, said they wouldn't leave until House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., allowed a vote on measures to curb it, and chanted over and over "No bill, no break!"

U.S. Rep Denny Heck on Wednesday criticized actions by Republicans in the House of Representatives who blocked an amendment addressing the marijuana banking crisis as part of the Fiscal Year 2017 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act (H.R. 5485). The bipartisan amendment, filed Monday by Heck and Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, would have banned federal regulators from penalizing banks, credit unions and other depository institutions for providing banking services to legal and licensed marijuana businesses.

Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen on Wednesday said she agreed with the “basic thrust” of a congressman’s comments who told her it was too soon to take her “foot off the pedal” of stimulus designed to help improve the labor market. During her testimony to the House Financial Services panel, Rep. Denny Heck, a Democrat from Washington, told the Fed chief: “I cannot shake the feeling it is way too premature to put out the mission accomplished banner on the aircraft carrier,” even though car and homes sales are strong, and the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.7%. The mission-accomplished banner is a reference to President George W. Bush’s infamous 2003 speech declaring victory in Iraq.
