Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the upcoming 51st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on August 6, 1965:

“The Voting Rights Act is one of the great guardians of our democracy.  Yet three years ago, the Supreme Court decided to dismantle some of the most important protections of this critical law – opening the door to brazen efforts to disenfranchise American citizens with new barriers to the ballot box.  Despite the flood of evidence that the Voting Rights Act must be restored and strengthened, the Republican Congress has refused to act.

“Congress has a responsibility to secure our democracy by renewing the Voting Rights Act.  Too many have given too much to defend and advance the right to vote in America – from the heroes of Selma and civil rights to the brave men and women in uniform who risk and give their lives for our freedom every day.

“The recent victories for voting rights in the courts only emphasize the critical need for this landmark legislation to be restored to its full strength.  Renewing the Voting Rights Act, by passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act, is a key component of House Democrats’ Stronger America agenda.  Republicans should come together with Democrats to ensure every American’s voice and vote are heard in our democracy.”
