Press Release

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) and City of Buffalo Councilman David Franczyk joined members of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation Board for a walk-through of the Buffalo Central Terminal.

Higgins recently sent a letter to the New York State Department of Transportation calling for the immediate release of a small portion of the $25 million set aside for the Buffalo train station, which currently sits at Exchange street, to begin a review of options for a new Buffalo train station including a potential new location at the Buffalo Central Terminal or Canalside.   Franczyk previously proposed the Central Terminal as a high-speed rail hub.

“I think most agree, this community can do much better than the train station we have today,” said Congressman Higgins.   “While 15 years ago consideration of a new station at the Central Terminal may have seemed far-reaching, it is a viable option today in the new Buffalo.”

“This would be a golden opportunity to do the right thing for the Central Terminal and entire Western New York community,” said Councilman Franczyk.

The Buffalo Central Terminal opened in 1929.  The more than 520,000 square feet, Art Deco style iconic structure was built to support over 200 trains and 10,000 passengers daily.  The final train left the station in 1979.
