$18 Million Rehabilitation Project Will Strengthen Vital Infrastructure

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll today announced that work will begin on an $18.3 million highway rehabilitation project to improve the mobility and safety of Interstate 990 in the town of Amherst in Erie County.

“Sustained and enhanced economic growth in New York State is directly linked to the reliability and condition of the transportation system,” said Commissioner Driscoll. “Under the leadership of Governor Andrew Cuomo, we continue to advance highway repair projects to ensure that New York State highways remain in a state of good repair to serve our residents and customers.”

The project will improve the mobility and safety of the Interstate 990 corridor by rehabilitating and resurfacing over 30 centerline miles of pavement between Interstate

290 and North French Road. Both mainline and ramp pavement will be resurfaced and

will have an expected service life of 15 years.

Other project improvements include the installation of new drainage, guide rail, traffic signs, pavement markings and traffic signal loop detectors on the off-ramps.

“The I-990 is an important northern corridor providing connections between Erie and Niagara Counties and the University at Buffalo North Campus,” said Congressman Brian Higgins.  “This project, which includes more than $16.4 million in federal funding, provides needed improvements while supporting local construction jobs.”

"Roads and bridges throughout Western New York need repair, and securing Upstate's fair share of state transportation dollars earlier this year will help to fix our crumbling infrastructure. That is why I am pleased that the State Transportation Department will soon start work to improve the safety and mobility for motorists on the Interstate 990," said State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said, “The 990 is a key arterial roadway for motorists in Erie County and I thank Governor Cuomo for his attention in improving this critical road. Travel between the Northtowns and the City of Buffalo will be greatly aided by this investment, which will benefit both residents and businesses.”

The construction contract was awarded to Union Concrete and Construction Corporation of West Seneca, Erie County. The project is scheduled to begin on October 3, 2016 and be completed in fall 2017.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
