Rep. Paul Cook Announces Grant to Expand Veterans Access to Healthcare

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Paul Cook (R – Apple Valley) announced that the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8988 in Bishop, California will receive an $80,000 grant to improve local veterans’ access to healthcare in Inyo and Mono Counties. Veterans living in rural areas often have trouble finding transportation to VA medical centers for care. Many are forced to travel hundreds of miles to receive VA care This grant will assist approximately 849 veterans in these counties. 

Cook said, “As the representative of California’s largest rural district, I’ve heard from veterans who are forced drive up to five hours for VA medical care. This grant will help some of our nation’s finest men and women get the medical care they’ve earned. VFW Post 8988 provides exceptional services for veterans in Bishop, and I’m  proud to see this grant awarded to it.”

A member of the House Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, and Veterans’ Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
