Broad, Bipartisan Energy Legislation Would Update America's Energy Policies

‘This broad, bipartisan energy bill offers a good way forward. It will help Americans produce more energy. It will help Americans pay less for energy. It will help Americans save energy.’

January 27, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor today regarding the Energy Policy Modernization Act:

‘The Energy Policy Modernization Act is the result of months of hard work across the aisle. It passed committee with overwhelming bipartisan support. And Congress hasn't passed legislation to update America's energy policies in nearly a decade.

‘It's time that change that.

‘This broad, bipartisan energy bill offers a good way forward.

‘It will help Americans produce more energy.

‘It will help Americans pay less for energy.

‘It will help Americans save energy.

‘Not only will this bipartisan legislation help bring our energy policies in line with the demands of today, it will also help position us to benefit from the opportunities of tomorrow.

‘So let’s work together to pass it.

‘The Senators from Alaska and Washington are proven bill managers.

‘I ask colleagues who have an amendment they’d like considered to please work with them.’

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell commented today regarding Governor Matt Bevin’s request for a 2-year extension to the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation that requires states to dramatically restructure their electricity systems based on how the agency thinks electricity should be produced and used in each state.

“I applaud Governor Bevin for filing an extension and refusing to submit a plan until the legal challenges are addressed,” Senator McConnell said. “He made the right decision to not saddle Kentucky with an Obama administration plan that is likely illegal and extremely detrimental to Kentucky’s economy.”

BACKGROUND: In 2015, Senator McConnell wrote the Nation’s Governors calling on them to reject the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed regulation that requires states to dramatically restructure their electricity systems based on how the agency thinks electricity should be produced and used in each state. Senator McConnell asked the Governors to “carefully review the consequences before signing up for this deeply misguided plan.

Senator McConnell wrote: “This proposed plan is already on shaky legal grounds, will be extremely burdensome and costly, and will not seriously address the global environmental concerns that are frequently raised to justify it. Moreover, declining to go along with the administration’s legally dubious plan will give the other two branches of government time to address the proposal and will not put your state at risk in the interim. It will provide time for the courts to rule on whether the EPA’s proposed rule is legal, and it will give Congress a chance to address numerous concerns surrounding this latest power grab by the EPA.”

March For Life

‘Participants in the March for Life remind us that a compassionate nation is one that fights to defend the most innocent. Like them, I believe that the lives of the unborn are precious and deserve to be treated with dignity.’

January 21, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following comment regarding the March for Life, which will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016, in our Nation’s Capital:

“Tens of thousands of Americans will gather in Washington to give voice to the voiceless by rallying for the rights of the unborn. Participants in the March for Life remind us that a compassionate nation is one that fights to defend the most innocent. Like them, I believe that the lives of the unborn are precious and deserve to be treated with dignity. That’s why I led a Republican Senate to vote on a bill to protect unborn children after 20 weeks in the womb. I am also proud that, after recent videos revealed the repugnant practices of Planned Parenthood, the Senate sent to the president’s desk legislation to defund it. Those who march should be encouraged in the knowledge that the Senate hears them, and that senators like myself are working to advance a more just and humane society that values innocent life.”
