Letter: State’s HIP architect ‘outstanding’ choice

Dec 1, 2016
In The News

Seema Verma is an outstanding choice to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and I’m delighted that she can bring her experience and expertise to the table for the Trump administration.

As the architect of the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), Indiana’s alternative to traditional Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, and a leader in Medicaid reform in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, Ms. Verma is uniquely positioned to help our country move forward, repeal and replace the broken policies of the Obama administration and ensure that Americans have access to affordable health care.

Since its creation, HIP, and its successor, HIP 2.0, have expanded access to hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers, incentivized smarter health care spending choices through the use of health savings accounts and connected participating Hoosiers to workforce training and potential employers. I’m confident that Ms. Verma will bring the same kind of proven, consumer-driven solutions to her work as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator. I want to congratulate Ms. Verma on her nomination and encourage her swift confirmation.
