On Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 2:30 PM, Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will hold a U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs oversight hearing on the findings and recommendations of the Indian Law and Order Commission’s report titled, "A Roadmap for Making Native America Safer."

On July 29, 2010, Congress enacted the Tribal Law and Order Act. The Act was intended to address the rapidly declining prosecutions in Indian country, improve coordination between the Department of the Interior, the Department of Justice, and tribes, and improve tribal law enforcement capacity and information sharing among the stakeholders.

The Commission is required to report to Congress on the implementation of the Act, and to recommend ways to strengthen justice and public safety in Indian country. The Committee will hear from the Administration and from tribal leaders to determine how the Act is working, if tribal members are safer as a result of the Act, and whether additional legislation is necessary.
