Sarbanes Slams Wall Street Giveaways and Mnuchin Nomination
Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) spoke on the House floor in opposition to the Systemic Risk Designation Improvement Act of 2016 (H.R. 6392), a bill that further erodes Wall Street oversight, and also to oppose President-elect Donald J. Trump's nomination of former Goldman Sachs partner and hedge fund manager Steven Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary.
Talking Money in Politics with Rep. Ruben Gallego (Part 2)
Here’s “Part 2” of my discussion with Rep. Ruben Gallego. In cities and states around the country, we’re hearing incredible success stories of people putting clean-elections systems in place to reduce the influence of wealthy and well-connected donors and return to government by the people.
Talking Money in Politics with Rep. Ruben Gallego (Part 1)
For #HispanicHeritageMonth, I sat down with Rep. Ruben Gallego to talk about how we can diversify the pool of candidates who run for local, state and federal office. Oftentimes, qualified candidates who can ably represent their communities are locked out of elected office because they lack access to wealthy donors who can contribute to their campaigns. But in some cities and states – including Rep. Gallego’s state of Arizona – people are fighting to change that by establishing clean-elections systems. These kinds of systems allow candidates to run competitive campaigns, and win, with the support of small donors in their local communities.
Wolf of Wall Street Enhancement Act
Rather than dealing with the urgent problems we face in our country – like stopping the spread of Zika in the U.S., preventing another Flint Water Crisis from happening again and passing gun safety reform – House Republican leaders choose instead to advance “The Wolf of Wall Street Enhancement Act” at the behest of wealthy special interests.

Sarbanes Calls on House Republican Leaders to #ActOnClimate
Leaders in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps don’t have the luxury of ideological climate change denial. They know climate change is a significant national security threat and they are trying to prepare for it. But House Republican leadership continues to deny the science and now wants to block the U.S. Department of Defense from preparing our armed forces to deal with the impacts of our changing climate.

Sarbanes Bill to Help Address National Opioid Epidemic Voted Favorably Out of Subcommittee on Health
A bill introduced by Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) to help address the nation's opioid epidemic was voted favorably out of the House Subcommittee on Health today. The Co-Prescribing to Reduce Overdoses Act (H.R. 3680) would encourage and train health care providers to prescribe overdose reversal drugs, such as Naloxone, when they prescribe common opioids – like pain medication – to patients at risk of addiction. Already, communities with these kinds co-prescription programs in place – like one administered by the San Francisco Public Health Department – have successfully slowed the growth of overdose deaths. The Co-Prescribing to Reduce Overdoses Act would enable more health care providers across the country to implement these kinds of lifesaving co-prescription programs.

Sarbanes Highlights Importance of Environmental Education
Today, I spent part of my morning enjoying the beautiful weather at Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center with students from Benjamin Franklin High School. We planted marsh grass and learned about wetland restoration. These kinds of hands-on environmental learning programs are the best ways to connect our kids with the outdoors and inspire the next generation of scientists and environmental stewards. That’s why I authored legislation to give schools additional resources for environmental education: http://1.usa.gov/1TtiXZE.
