Congresswoman Speier Urges Implementation of NTSB Recommendations to Improve Management of Pipeline Safety

January 28, 2015
Press Release

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo counties) issued the following statement in response to the National Transportation Safety Board study on integrity management of gas transmission pipelines in high consequence areas:

“The NTSB study spells out what we have known for years and what the residents of San Bruno painfully and tragically experienced in 2010: our pipeline safety efforts have been haphazard and cost lives. Pipeline safety is compromised by lack of in-line inspections, inadequate maps and poor federal oversight of state utility regulators. The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is under-resourced and toothless. We have to get our act together and protect lives, property and infrastructure before we have another San Bruno tragedy.”
