Project supported by majority of Mainers; would bring needed economic development to Northern Maine

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree today voiced her continued support for designating land in Maine’s North Woods donated by Elliotsville Plantation Inc. (EPI) as a National Monument or National Park.

“A National Monument or Park in the North Woods would bring much-needed economic development to Northern Maine as it faces major economic challenges,” said Pingree. “I continue to believe a monument or park would greatly benefit the state by bringing in thousands of visitors and creating hundreds of jobs for the region. And several polls also now show that most people across the state support the project."

Maine Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representative Bruce Poliquin today sent a letter to President Obama outlining their conditions for a national monument designation.

“For years, Maine’s entire Congressional delegation has engaged in conversations with EPI about its wish to donate this land as a park, and we’ve heard from many people on both sides of the issue,” said Pingree.  “I’m encouraged that the conversation has gone to the next level by outlining a possible roadmap to a monument designation.”
