Representing the 37th District of California

Statement on Dr. Craig Spencer being diagnosed with Ebola

October 24, 2014
Press Release

LOS ANGELES, CA--Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member on the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, released the following statement after Dr. Craig Spencer tested positive for Ebola in New York City:

"My thoughts are with Dr. Craig Spencer today, and it is my sincere hope that his Ebola diagnosis is short-lived, and he has a speedy recovery. Dr. Spencer was truly doing the Lord's work providing much-needed healthcare to people in West Africa, and we should honor his service and his bravery.

"We knew that it was likely that there would be additional cases in the United States, and at this point, it appears that the medical system in New York City has responded appropriately to ensure that Dr. Spencer received the treatment that he needed as soon as he reported his fever.

"I hope that this case is not used as an opportunity to promote fear. The United States has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, and I am confident that our expertise will minimize and contain these cases to keep the American people safe."
