Aurora, IL – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) hosted the official ceremony to name the U.S. Post Office facility, located at 525 N. Broadway in Aurora, Illinois, as the Kenneth M. Christy Post Office Building.

Ken Christy was a dedicated public servant who spent over 35 years as a letter carrier for the Aurora Post Office. He also served as Aurora Township Clerk and as president of the Illinois State Association of Letter Carriers. He passed away suddenly on March 26, 2016.

Congressman Foster introduced the bill, H.R. 4960, to name the post office on April 15, 2016 to honor Christy. It quickly received the support of the entire Illinois Congressional Delegation, including Senator Durbin who sponsored the Senate companion bill.

“Today’s ceremony is a wonderful example of our community coming together to honor the memory of Ken Christy. I am so grateful to everyone who made it possible.” Foster said. “For more than 35 years, Ken was committed to serving his fellow letter carriers and fellow citizens. He dedicated his life to public service, so it is only fitting that the main post office building in the city he loved bears his name.”

“This past March, I lost a good friend of 20 years, and Illinois lost a champion for working men and women. Ken Christy left behind an incredible legacy of public service and is remembered not just as a leader, but a trusted friend to his fellow letter carriers,” Senator Durbin said. “I’m proud to have worked with Congressman Foster and the National Association of Letter Carriers to help make this dedication a reality. Now this post office will serve as a permanent tribute to his service to Aurora and the people of Illinois.”

The bill was passed by the House on June 21, 2016. It was then passed by the Senate on July 7, 2016. President Obama signed the legislation into law on July 15, 2016.
