Making College More Affordable

Dear Friend,

If you or someone you know is planning to attend college next year, now is the time to begin thinking about the resources available to help with the cost.

On October 1, the Department of Education began accepting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms, commonly known as FAFSA. Completing this set of forms is the first step toward applying for grants, work-study, and educational loans at nearly every university in the country.

A higher education is one of the most important investments Americans can make in their future. That is why I recently worked with some of my congressional colleagues to simplify the FAFSA process in order to give students and families more time to prepare and asses their options.

This year, students have the ability to submit their FAFSA three months earlier than in the past. Additionally, families can use their tax information from 2015, rather than guess about 2016, when filling out the forms. This simpler process could encourage hundreds of thousands of additional students to apply for and claim the aid they are eligible for when enrolling in college.

As always, the federal deadline for completing the FAFSA is June 30, but many states and schools have earlier deadlines. – some as early as February and March. To find the deadlines for your area, click here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm#

If you have any questions regarding applying for federal financial aid, please feel free to contact my office at 317-283-6516.

Your Friend,
