Sens. McConnell and Paul send letter to President in Support of Request for Major Disaster Declaration

Washington, DC – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Rand Paul sent a letter to President Obama on Monday morning supporting Governor Steve Beshear’s request for a major disaster declaration for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In the letter to the President, the Senators wrote: “Timely and serious consideration of the Governor’s disaster declaration request on your part would aid Kentucky communities and families so severely affected by this most recent disaster.”

Senator McConnell's prayers go out for the families of the victims and to all those who have been affected by the terrible storms that hit Kentucky. Senator McConnell's office has been in contact with the Governor's office will continue to closely follow developments to help wherever we can.

Below, please find emergency information for the Red Cross, Kentucky Emergency Management, locations of shelters across the state and information for missing loved ones.

Locate a shelter

People can find Red Cross shelters by contacting local emergency officials, visiting www.redcross.org, or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). iPhone users can download a free Red Cross shelter view app from the app store.

Several shelters have opened by the Red Cross to accommodate citizens displaced by the storm:

Missing Persons

Those affected can let loved ones know they are safe by registering on the secure Red Cross Safe and Well website, where they can also update their Facebook and Twitter status. If you don’t have computer access, you can also register by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Loved ones outside the disaster area can use Safe and Well to find information about loved ones in the affected areas by using a pre-disaster phone number or complete address. Smart phone users can visit www.redcross.org/safeandwell and click on the “List Yourself as Safe and Well” or “Search for friends and family” link.

You can also register a missing person’s information on the Kentucky Emergency Management website at www.kyem.ky.gov

 

Sen. McConnell Comments on Kentucky Storm Deaths

Louisville, KY - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks Friday regarding the severe storms that hit Kentucky:

"Elaine and I are praying for the families of the victims and to all those who have been affected by these terrible storms that hit Kentucky over the past two days. My office has been in contact with the Governor's office and I will continue to closely follow developments to help wherever we can. Finally, I want to extend my gratitude to the first responders, including the Kentucky National Guard, who are providing the much-needed response and relief."
