Carson Statement on Recent Officer-Involved Shootings

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman André Carson (D-IN ), released the following statement:

“Too often, it takes tragedies like the two we have seen this week in Louisiana and Minnesota to highlight the problems we still face in America.  

“It is my hope that as the victims’ families cope with their terrible losses, communities across America will honor Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by ensuring all individuals are protected equally under the law.

“I know the struggle for peace and justice matters to every American. As a former law enforcement officer, I know that it is every officer’s responsibility to protect and serve, not intimidate and assault. The vast majority of officers take this commitment very seriously.

“Unfortunately, the American people are losing faith that officers who cross the line will be held accountable. Time after time, they see these officers escape without facing jail time, calling into question the ability of local authorities to investigate and prosecute effectively. It is time that we accept the need for outside independent investigation into police shootings, to better ensure officers are brought to justice.

“In times like these, we must join together as one nation to honor these young men and ensure that justice prevails.”
