When adjusted for inflation, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) receive nearly 25 percent less funding today than in 2003.  The extreme lack of funding puts America further behind on groundbreaking research for treatments and cures for debilitating and fatal diseases; it hurts the economy, as the NIH provides more than 400,000 jobs across the country; and it puts America at greater risk for the spread of infectious disease and bioterrorism.

Congress has let its commitment to medical research lag and the pace of medical discoveries has slowed.  If these cuts and the sequester budget caps are left in place, they will further depress investments in medical research, threatening the competitiveness of America's biomedical research industry.

Caucus Goal

To create a bipartisan group of Members of the House of Representatives to develop a plan to increase the purchasing power of the National Institutes of Health.
