I am a strong advocate for our Second Amendment freedoms.
The Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to enshrine the pre-existing right of individuals to keep and bear arms. It states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
At the same time, I understand the obligation we have to protect our communities. I believe that the rights of law-abiding citizens to purchase, possess, and use firearms is entirely consistent with that obligation. We must come together as a country, seek out solutions that work toward preventing horrific crimes, like what occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary, and give thorough and thoughtful review of proposals that address gun regulations within the confines of the United States Constitution.
