Rep. Trey Gowdy backs bill to limit refugees

A key House committee will vote Wednesday on legislation that would tighten screening of refugees, allow fewer into the country and let local officials bar them from resettling in their communities.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-Spartanburg, said the proposal is a national security imperative and reflects concerns in his congressional district.

“The people of Upstate South Carolina are very compassionate but they’re also scared,” Gowdy said in an interview Tuesday.

The Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act, set for a vote in the House Judiciary Committee, would allow a maximum 60,000 refugees into the country each year, down from the 2017 goal of 100,000 a year set by President Obama. It also would prevent future presidents from raising the cap without approval from Congress.
