WASHINGTON—Rep. Paul Ryan won the support of most of the hard-line conservative Freedom Caucus Wednesday night, clearing the highest hurdle to becoming the next House speaker.

After securing the support of about two-thirds of the group of roughly 40 staunch conservatives, the Wisconsin Republican now likely has enough votes to be elected on the House floor next week.
