ADAMS, Charles E., a Doorkeeper from Maryland; born in Smithsburg, Washington County, Md., 1842; served in the United States Army, 1862–1866; merchant; tax collector for Washington County, Md., 1878–1883; newspaper publisher; elected Doorkeeper of the United States House of Representatives for the Fifty-first Congress (December 2, 1889–December 8, 1891); assessor of internal revenue, 1898–1900; superintendent of Antietam Battlefield, 1902–1912; died on June 6, 1912, in Sharpsburg, Md.
