Richmond, Landrieu Announce $8.8M In Disaster Grants for St. Tammany Parish, Archdiocese of New Orleans, Westbank
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Cedric Richmond D-La and U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La today announced over $8.8 million in federal funding for reconstruction efforts related to Hurricane Katrina.
“Hurricane Katrina destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in New Orleans and this funding will support our continued efforts to reconstruct and revitalize south Louisiana,” Sen. Landrieu said. “As always, I remain committed to rebuilding our communities stronger and better than before.”
“Each grant awarded brings a measure of closure to the families and communities in the state of Louisiana,” Rep. Richmond said. “Funding announced today will ensure that we can make the necessary repairs to continue providing vital services to the city and people of New Orleans.
Today’s grant provides:
• $2.7 million to the Alexander Milne Home for Women for the replacement of four dormitory buildings to be rebuilt in Waldheim in St. Tammany Parish.
• $2.1 million to the St. Tammany Parish School Board for contents and equipment located in their elementary and high schools. The school buildings sustained high wind and flood damage resulting from Hurricane Katrina.
• $1.7 million to the Roman Catholic Church/Archdiocese of New Orleans for the replacement of the St. Raphael School Cafeteria/Classroom Building. The campus buildings were inundated with over eight feet of floodwater that caused significant damage during Hurricane Katrina.
• $1.2 million to the New Orleans City Park Bayou Oaks Golf Clubhouse. Due to high winds and extensive flooding from Hurricane Katrina, the facility incurred four weeks of water inundation.
• $1.1 million to the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) to demolish 181 housing units damaged during Hurricane Katrina. High winds, flooding and rain intrusion from Hurricane Katrina severely damaged these housing units at the Christopher Park Homes housing development in Algiers owned by the HANO.
