Fiscal Responsibility

As a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Congressman Cartwright takes seriously his responsibility to ensure that government is utilizing taxpayers’ hard earned money effectively.  He plans to fight hard to combat waste, fraud, and abuse, while ensuring new government programs focus on growing our economy and creating opportunity.

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright’s Streamlining Energy Efficiency for Schools Act of 2015 (H.R. 756) unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives.  First introduced in February 2014, the bill also unanimously passed the House during the 113th Congress.

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that his legislation, the Making Electronic Government Accountable By Yielding Tangible Efficiencies (MEGABYTE) Act, has been signed into law by President Barack Obama.

The legislation (H.R. 4904), introduced in the U.S. House on April 12, 2016 along with Representatives Will Hurd (R-TX-23), Steve Russell (R-OK-5) and Elijah Cummings (D-MD-7), passed in the U.S. Senate on July 14 by unanimous consent.  The bill passed in the House on June 7 by a vote of 366-0.

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright applauded the passage of the Making Electronic Government Accountable By Yielding Tangible Efficiencies (MEGABYTE) Act.  Cartwright’s bill will now be sent to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Matt Cartwright and Gerry Connolly introduced the bipartisan Annuity Safety and Security Under Reasonable Enforcement (ASSURE) Act, with the support of 24 colleagues. 

The legislation aims to protect federal workers, military retirees, and postal retirees by expanding Truth in Lending Act disclosure provisions to any situation where a federal or military pension is used as consideration for an “advance.”  The bill also caps the interest rate on such an “advance” at prime plus six percent.

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Matt Cartwright (PA-17) and Bill Posey (FL-08) re-introduced the bipartisan Truth in Settlements Act of 2015.  The legislation would require federal agencies to publicly disclose the terms of non-confidential settlements obtained from offenders.  U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (MA) and James Lankford (OK) have introduced the legislation in the Senate.

Washington, DC – Today U.S. Representatives Matt Cartwright (PA-17) and Steve Cohen (TN-9) re-introduced the Protecting Consumers from Unreasonable Credit Rates Act, legislation that would enact a cap on reform fees and rates associated with consumer credit products, including short-term and long-term payday loans and car title loans. 

U.S. Senate Assistant Minority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Larson (CT-01), a member of the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Social Security, in introducing the ‘Social Security 2100 Act’.  The measure stands to cut taxes for Social Security recipients, provide a benefit bump for current and future beneficiaries, and keep the system strong for generations to come.
