Congressman Trent Franks

Representing the 8th District of Arizona

Energy Security

Our current energy policy is not just detrimental to our economy; it is detrimental to our national security interests as well. The sad fact is that by purchasing oil from certain Middle Eastern nations, American money finds its way into the hands of terrorists, and ultimately we are subjecting ourselves to the whims of radical regimes.

It is critical, now more than ever, to unlock America's vast supplies of domestic energy in order to provide for our growing energy needs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and prevent critical energy shortages in the future. Our energy problem will not be solved by any one policy; we need a well-rounded, comprehensive approach to energy reform that immediately addresses the lack of domestic production for the short term, and encourages research into alternative forms of energy for the long term.

In addition to producing our own oil and utilizing safe, clean, effective forms of alternative energy we must also apply American ingenuity to the task of developing new, efficient, sustainable forms of energy, with which we can decrease our dependence on fossil fuels.

As the Obama Administration continues to ignore the growing, existential threat posed by Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) technology in the hands of a terrorist enemy such as Iran and ISIS or in the hands of a more conventionally armed but equally psychotic North Korea, and in light of the Senate Democrats’ continued intransigence in blocking important Homeland Security legislation, it is incumbent upon the United States Congress to double-down on our proven Missile Defense technology.

“There is a moment in the life of nearly every problem when it is big enough to be seen by reasonable people and still small enough to be addressed. Passage of this important legislation presents an opportunity for America and the free world to address and mitigate the vulnerability that naturally occurring or weaponized EMP represents to the mechanisms of our civilization.
