KEMP, Jack French, a Representative from New York; born in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif., July 13, 1935; B.A., Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif., 1957; United States Army Reserve, 1958-1962 (active duty, 1958); professional football player, 1957-1970; special assistant to the Governor of California, 1967; staff, Republican National Committee, 1969; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-second and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1971-January 3, 1989); was not a candidate for renomination to the One Hundred First Congress in 1988, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States; United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, 1989-1993; unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1996; died on May 2, 2009, in Bethesda, Md.

The Jack F. Kemp Archival Collection chronicles Kemp’s political career with a major focus on the Congressional papers resulting from his nine terms as a member of the House of Representatives (1971-1989). The archives also holds records related to his service as chairman of the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform (1995), co-director of free market advocacy group Empower America, and as the Republican Party’s candidate for Vice President in 1996. The collection includes speeches, correspondence, voting records, calendars and travel schedules, campaign records, briefing books, press, photographs, film and video, ephemera, and memorabilia. There are some records pertaining to Kemp’s football career; namely, papers from his terms as president of the American Football League Players Association. The collection is currently being processed and is not open for research.
