More on Defense & National Security

June 16, 2016 Press Release
“Defense related manufacturing is a central part of our region’s economic recovery and future, and the funding bill passed today invests the resources needed to keep the current trends on track. Coupled with the defense authorization bill I helped craft and pass in the House in May, this bill supports Virginia class submarines, the Ohio Replacement, and a range of other programs vital not just to Connecticut, but to the nation. It is a testament to the exceptional workers who supply and build the most advanced submarines in the world that we are continuing to prioritize these programs, even while making tough budgetary decisions about how to allocate limited resources.”

“The roundtable at Grasso Tech this morning was a great opportunity to once again get all of the key stakeholders for the manufacturing pipeline into one place,” said the delegation members. “The discussion was focused on how we build upon the success of the first graduating class in order to make sure that we are training enough skilled workers to meet the growing need in high-tech manufacturing. With work at Electric Boat quickly ramping up, we need to be doing everything we can to prepare Connecticut workers to fill new positions at the shipyard and across the state-wide network of suppliers.”

"Admiral Davidson, it is a pleasure to see you again. You and your entire team did an incredible job hosting me and my staff in Norfolk earlier this year. It was a great chance to see firsthand many of the same issues we will talk about here today. Most importantly, thank you the witnesses here to share their deck plate perspective on the challenges that our Navy faces in operations and readiness. I know we will benefit greatly to get the on the ground view of the challenges facing our Naval forces."

“While I have a number of concerns with this bill that I would like to see addressed in conference, I ultimately chose to vote yes because it is a good bill for the defense priorities of our region, state, and nation as a whole,” said Courtney.

“While I have a number of concerns with this bill that I would like to see addressed in conference, I ultimately chose to vote yes because it is a good bill for the defense priorities of our region, state, and nation as a whole,” said Courtney. “The bill contains a number of critical items for Connecticut, including full support for the robust submarine production that is driving the economic recovery in my district, restoring critical gaps in aircraft production levels, and further invests in our state’s National Guard C-130 Airwing known as the ‘Flying Yankees’."

“I enthusiastically support the Seapower portion of the defense bill, which is a strong bipartisan boost to our security on, below, and above the seas. The Seapower Subcommittee worked hard this year examining the president’s budget, as well as the strategic maritime context we are supporting these programs in. We have determined the following: demand for our naval fleet is higher than ever and so is the strain on the force. A casual review of the force explains why. China’s navy is militarizing the South China Sea threatening good order and commerce on the world’s seaways completely in violation of maritime law, and Russia’s navy is recapitalizing its fleet, particularly its undersea fleet and operating at a level not seen since the Cold War. These are two examples of the up tempo challenges that the Navy faces every single day."

“This is a good bill for the defense priorities of our region and state, and I am proud to have worked on a bipartisan basis to pass it” said Courtney. “From fully supporting the submarine construction that is fueling our economic recovery in eastern Connecticut, to restoring critical gaps in aircraft production levels and investment in our state’s ‘Flying Yankees’, this measure makes a solid investment in Connecticut while meeting the security needs of our nation. As the ranking member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee that played a key role in crafting the bill, I am proud of the strong bipartisan support this bill provides for the hard working men and women across Connecticut who go to work every day in support our nation’s defense."

“As a longtime champion of Connecticut’s “Flying Yankees,” I am pleased that this measure will support the last major piece of their transition to their new C-130 flying mission,” said Courtney. “On the House Armed Services Committee I have worked hard, along with my colleagues in the Connecticut Congressional Delegation, to end years of uncertainty for the unit by securing a relevant and enduring mission for our Air National Guard. This small air terminal will provide the facilities they need to fully support that mission, and coupled with the long-term avionics upgrades I have supported, this measure continues to ensure a bright future for the Flying Yankees.”
