Congress Successfully Overrides Presidential Veto

Sep 28, 2016
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) released the following statement today after the House and Senate voted to override President Obama’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act:

“Families who lost loved ones to acts of international terrorism on American soil deserve the opportunity to seek damages from the foreign governments or officials who aided or abetted the terrorists. State sponsors of terrorism – whether they be officially listed as such or not – should not be able to evade justice.

“The Constitution sets a high bar for Congress to enact a law over the President’s objection, and I’m pleased we were able to do so here. While the White House says this override is ‘embarrassing,’ I say it’s long overdue.”
