Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02), Rep. Maxine Waters, and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver called on Republican leadership of the Financial Services Committee to hold a field hearing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to examine the government’s response to the recent flooding in that area, and to better inform the Committee as it prepares to consider the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is set to expire on September 30, 2017.

“People living outside of flood hazard areas make up the majority of the victims of this flooding and yet, because they did not have and were not required to purchase flood insurance, they will have to rebuild their homes and lives without the support that federal policy was designed to provide,” said Richmond. “With the large gap between what the flood risk maps showed and what actually happened when the rain fell, it is crucial Congress see first-hand the damage that has been done.
