Passage of the $1.15 trillion omnibus spending bill last week was celebrated by many as a rare bit of bipartisan cooperation in Congress, even though that cooperation involved both sides giving into some of the others’ worst instincts. Spending will continue to increase, unaffordable tax breaks for special interest groups will survive, Medicare and Social Security spending will go unreformed.

The U.S. House late Thursday afternoon passed by voice vote the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015, which includes a provision worked on by two of Connecticut's congressional delegates that would allow federal funding to support displays and exhibits, for example, inside the National Coast Guard Museum planned for downtown New London. That support, however, would not extend to the bricks and mortar aspects of the estimated $100 million project.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A fund established last year to break out the Ohio-class Replacement nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) from the Navy’s traditional shipbuilding budget could cut the $100 billion price tag for the 12 boomers by up to 10 percent, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
