WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Mulvaney released the following statement:

“The news out of the White House today that the President plans to close Guantanamo Bay is especially concerning for those in South Carolina.  Though his proposal did not specify where the suspected terrorists would be relocated, a facility in South Carolina has been evaluated by the Pentagon in the past.  While the President touts ‘bipartisanship’ for his proposal, he ignores the bipartisan agreements in Congress that have barred the transfer of these detainees to U.S. soil.  This seems to be a pattern for the President.  Bipartisanship is good when it favors his idea, but it’s to be ignored when he disagrees with Congress.  The bottom line is that Congress passed legislation that was signed into law in November that bans the transfer of detainees to U.S. soil and that is the law of the land.”
