WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Mulvaney released the following statement:

“Today the President announced his nomination to fill the Supreme Court justice vacancy created by the death of Antonin Scalia.  I’ve given a good bit of thought to whether or not the Senate should take up consideration of the nominee.  After some research, it seems that the political precedent — established by ALL political parties (even those that pre-date modern Democrats and Republicans) — is that the Senate, under a divided government, does not take up such consideration in an election year.  I have no problem with the Senate following their own precedent here, and I will defend their decision to not take up confirmation hearings.  The right to nominate for the vacancy should — as it has for 200 years — fall to the incoming President.”
