Jul 14, 2016 Press Release
“Contrary to claims that the Select Committee’s work is done, Republicans are forging ahead with one of the longest, least productive, and most partisan investigations in history—and the American taxpayers are still footing the bill. Republicans admit that this witness has no firsthand information at all about the attacks in Benghazi and that his testimony will in no way affect the final report they adopted last week. Instead, Republicans are conducting this interview in retaliation for the Defense Department having the audacity to object to their multiple, last-minute, and threatening demands. These actions by Republicans continue to undermine the integrity of the House of Representatives.”

Republicans have moved the goal post again, and they now plan to delay the end of the Select Committee to make an entirely new request for the executive branch to conduct a classification review of a large volume of documents, the vast majority of which were never used to question any witness and are not even mentioned in their report.

Let me end with this, Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty deserve better than this. The American people deserve better than this. We are better than this. And I hope, I pray—that we can learn from this partisan and abusive investigative experience so that we never dishonor the memory of American heroes like this again.

“Just to be 100% clear, it was the Republicans who introduced this specific Facebook post into the interview record—with the anti-Clinton hashtag—not the Democrats. The Republicans now seem to be lashing out wildly at anything they can, but if they ever release this transcript, it will clearly show that the statements in their memo to the press are inaccurate.”

Anti-Clinton Air Base Mechanic Flown to Washington D.C. at Taxpayer Expense for Interview Today
“Republicans are addicted to Benghazi and to exploiting this tragedy for political reasons. If we needed any more evidence that this investigation was a partisan charade, now we have it. One day after issuing their ‘final’ report, Republicans are requiring yet another witness to be flown to Washington so they can investigate his postings on social media. Why in the world should the American taxpayers be forced to continue paying millions of dollars for Republicans to chase down unsubstantiated conspiracy theories against Secretary Clinton?”

However, back in 2014, then-House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa went onto the House floor and made the same point when he read from a then-classified email explaining that it “recounts items discussed in a Secure Video Teleconference attended by senior Administration officials.” He claimed the email “shows the White House had hurried to settle on a false narrative—one at odds with the conclusions reached by those on the ground.” Issa’s actions were reported in the press at the time.
