Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today issued the following statement regarding the Senate’s passage of the Conference Report on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017. The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 92 yeas to 7 noes. The House of Representative previously passed the Conference Report on Friday, December 2, 2016 by a vote of 375 yeas to 34 noes. The bill now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign the measure into law.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo raised Guam’s continued H-2B visa challenges during a hearing of the House Committee on Natural Resources’ Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs. Congresswoman Bordallo noted that the denials of H-2B visas have had adverse impacts on Guam’s construction and health care industries, and noted her work to address the H-2B challenges through a provision she included in the House-passed FY17 defense authorization bill as well as with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Bordallo today wrote to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Director Leon Rodriguez to urge him to provide immediate regulatory relief to address the continued H-2B challenges on Guam. Congresswoman Bordallo reiterated her concern that the high rates of H-2B renewal denials are impacting Guam’s workforce and will adversely affect Guam’s construction and health industries, among others, including ongoing and future projects related to the military build-up and associated civilian infrastructure projects.

Bordallo today spoke before the House Committee on Rules to propose the text of H.R. 44, as modified, the Guam World War II Loyalty Recognition Act, as an amendment to H.R. 4909, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017. She also proposed an amendment that would provide the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with flexibility in renewing H-2B visas on Guam.
