McKinley Visit to Camp Dawson Highlights WV Contributions to National Security

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Rep. David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) traveled to Camp Dawson in Preston County, where he discussed national security issues with General James Hoyer, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard and other top officials, toured training facilities, and met with students at the Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy.

“With all that is happening in the world – ISIS’s threats to America and Europe, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and attacks against Israel -- the discussion about America’s security and West Virginia’s contribution to it was very timely,” said McKinley.

“General Hoyer and General Buckalew understand the vital role West Virginia can play in protecting the United States, and I commend them for their vision,” said McKinley. “Camp Dawson’s location and facilities make it ideal for a host of military functions. We will continue to work with them to expand its mission.”

McKinley also met with leaders and students with the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe program and Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy. The ChalleNGe program helps turn around the lives of troubled youths by providing structure, discipline, education, and life skills.

McKinley is co-chair of the bipartisan Youth ChalleNGe Caucus in the House and has led the charge to increase funding for the program.

“The Youth ChalleNGe program has given hope to thousands of kids and helped them get back on the right path,” said McKinley. “Seeing firsthand the difference the program has in changing the lives of these kids is extremely fulfilling. That’s why I have championed this program in Congress and will continue to promote it.”
