WTAP: Rep. McKinley visits Parkersburg

“U.S. Congressman David McKinley made stops in Parkersburg Tuesday. On his agenda: safety and autism. The first district congressman took part in a student assembly, discussing how people'sprivacy can be violated-and stolen-in today's technology world.

“Sponsored by Google, presenters explained how teenagers can be more at risk than their parents, and being careful about what they share, even with their friends.

“McKinley told students at Van Devender Middle School even a united states congressman can be at risk.

"Often in Washington, when I travel, I cannot take my cell phone with me," he explained. "The government is afraid of foreign governments hacking into the system We have to make sure the kids are aware of this as well."

“McKinley also met with members of the Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley.April is national autism month, and among those on hand was the head of the autism program in West Virginia.

“Dr. Marc Ellison says adults-not just young people-are among those who deal with it.”

"The congressman needs to know, for adults with autism, it takes about $175 billion a year to supportthem," Dr. Ellison said, "and probably because there are no mandates for those folks."

“The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley, and five similar chapters in West Virginia, are observing national autism month by raising awareness about ASD: Autism Spectrum Disorders.

“Dr. Ellison says autism happens in one in every 68 births, making it the leading disability in this country.”
