State Journal: Will train derailment derail lawmakers?

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., toured the CSX train derailment site in Fayette County Feb. 17 along with U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins, R-W.Va., and Tomblin.

“First and foremost, after touring the derailment site, I am thankful that all West Virginians are safe. We must work together to find ways to ensure this type of accident does not happen again and transport this material as safe as humanly possible,” Manchin said in a statement. “I will be working with federal, state and industry officials in the coming weeks to make the necessary improvements to secure our safety.”

U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va.'s office said he too was thankful no one was hurt.

“Thankfully, there were no major injuries from this, and we're happy to hear that. It's too early to say what happened here, but just last week Rep. McKinley released a statement about the need for the Keystone Pipeline,” his office said in a Feb. 17 statement. “While it's not going to solve everything, this incident is indicative that there are better ways of doing things, and train derailments are much more dangerous than pipelines.” ...
