Parkersburg News and Sentinel: Flood Insurance Act passes in U.S. House

The U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday approved to roll back a recently enacted overhaul of the federal flood insurance program, after homeowners in flood-prone areas complained about sharp premium increases.

The House of Representatives approved the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act by a vote of 306-91 Tuesday night. The bill would undo aspects of the Biggert-Waters Act, passed in 2012.

The bill now moves to the Senate. Many members of the House of Representatives are hoping for a quick response from the Senate as well, government officials said.

Among changes in the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act are provisions that would allow affected communities to challenge assumptions made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency during the floodplain remapping process.
