Columbus Dispatch: Ohio energy-efficiency mandates costly, ineffective, report says

“Ohio consumers and businesses are suffering economic harm because of the mandate,” said the report by Jonathan Lesser, a New Mexico economist who has written extensively about energy rules and pricing.

The co-sponsors of the report include the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Business-Ohio and Industrial Energy Users-Ohio.

By releasing the report, the groups hope to breathe new life into Senate Bill 58, a measure that stalled in the Senate Public Utilities Committee in December. The bill would make it easier for utilities to meet annual benchmarks for “green” energy and energy efficiency.

In this case, energy efficiency means programs that help customers reduce their electricity use.
