The Hyde Amendment is 40 years old today. The amendment prohibits tax dollars from being used to pay for abortions. 2/3rds of all Americans agree that tax dollars should not be used to perform abortions.
I was humbled to be honored last night at the annual Dining Away Duchenne event in Washington. Duchenne is one of the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases known as Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne presents itself in childhood, usually between the ages of 3-5. Life expectancy used to be only into the teen years. But thanks to events like these, life expectancy is now into the 30s and beyond.
Ellie Blackwelder of Guntersville High School won this year's 4th Congressional District Art Compeition back in May. Her winning piece titled "Stray," is now the centerpiece of the Alabama delegation's winning artwork hanging inside the U.S. Capitol Complex in Washington.

It's hard to believe, but this weekend we will mark the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on our country. After those attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania, we all vowed we would never forget. And so on this anniversary, I encourage you to remember those lives lost and to remember that the War on Terrorism continues.
