Protecting the American people is one of the fundamental duties of the federal government.
Congress must work with the President, as well as state and local governments, to secure our borders, prevent terrorist attacks, and prepare for and respond to emergencies.
The security of our homeland, however, must not come at the expense of American values. There must be a balance between the safety and security and the fundamental rights and civil liberties. Congress must include strict safeguards and oversight to ensure our Constitutional freedoms are protected.
Fixing our nation’s broken immigration system is critical to the long-term security, stability, and economic growth of the United States. There are an estimated 12 million persons currently residing here who are undocumented. The truth is that most foreign-born persons in America are law-abiding, documented, tax-paying residents. My hope is that Democrats and Republicans can work together to support immigration legislation that reforms our current system by securing our borders, shutting down the path to illegal entry and employment, and establishing a strict legal process for qualifying immigrants to earn legal status.
