Seventy percent of the fuel burned today is used in transportation, largely in passenger vehicles. That’s why it’s essential that fuel economy be a national priority in order to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease the nation’s dependence on oil imports

Rep. Eshoo has consistently led the effort to raise the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automakers and has supported the progress the Obama Administration has made to update standards.

Click here to read Rep. Eshoo’s statement of support when President Obama, automakers, the State of California and environmental groups announced an agreement on setting fuel economy standards at 54.5 mpg by 2025.

Over the life of the program, the standards will save an estimated 12 billion barrels of oil and save consumers, on average, more than $3,000 over the life of a vehicle. The standards will reduce carbon dioxide pollution by over 6 billion metric tons, equivalent to the emissions from the U.S. last year, or what the Amazon rainforest absorbs in three years.
