Education and Workforce Training

As a former preschool teacher, school board member, and parent advocate, education is what got Senator Murray into politics in the first place, and she has never stopped fighting to put students first and make sure they have the opportunity to succeed. Senator Murray believes that a high-quality education for every student is one of the best investments our country can make to ensure broad-based and long-term economic growth, and that the federal government has an important role to play in making sure our education system is working seamlessly and fairly for people from the cradle through their career.

Senator Murray was proud to work with both Republicans and Democrats to fix the badly broken No Child Left Behind law in a way that will work for Washington state students, parents, teachers, and communities. In 2015, she worked to pass the Every Student Succeeds Act that Congress approved with a strong bipartisan majority, and she will continue to build on that work for the youngest learners to those pursuing higher education and building their skills to advance in the workplace. She will continue fighting for:

  • Improving the nation’s workforce development system through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act which she led to passage in 2014
  • Expanding access to early learning opportunities so more children start kindergarten ready to learn
  • Protecting critical funding for education and training to make sure all students and workers have access to a quality learning opportunities

Senator Murray will continue to fight to strengthen education opportunities for all students, regardless of where they’re from, how they learn, or how much money their parents make by:

  • Continuing her work to expand access to early childhood learning
  • Strengthening K-12 education so students are able to take on the jobs of the 21st century
  • Expanding educational opportunities for all students, including homeless and foster youth, students with disabilities, as well as military-connected students.
  • Expanding access to apprenticeships to help workers get the training and experience that leads to good-paying jobs
  • Making college more affordable and reduce the crushing burden of student loans
