Connecting With Mainers

Since starting my work in the nation's capital, I have learned that my role as a U.S. Senator is essentially two jobs rolled into one. There is the legislative side of things where I write bills, vote, and work with my colleagues to support Maine communities and help craft a better America for future generations. I also act as a liasion between the people of Maine and the federal government. Every day I meet with a large number of folks from Maine, so that my staff and I can provide the best possible constituent services. To help accomplish this goal we have started two programs that enable me to meet with as many Mainers as possible.

First, I hold a weekly constituent breakfast every Wednesday the Senate is in session called "Capitol Coffee with Angus." This is a great opportunity for Mainers in the area to stop by my office, say hello, and talk about issues important to them. Along with coffee we are proud to provide homemade blueberry muffins made with real Maine blueberries!

Second, for those who cannot travel to D.C., I have been using video conferencing technology to connect with various people and organizations in Maine. This includes my ongoing "Capitol Class with Angus" series. My goal is to connect with as many Maine high schools as possible over the course of my term in the Senate. We have already had tremendous sucess with six different schools across the state.

Lastly, at home in Maine we have started a new outreach program entitled, "Your Government, Your Neighborhood," designed to make the federal government more accessible to a greater number of people. Each month, members of my staff travel to communities throughout the state to provide services in areas that previously had little access to a congressional office. Constituent service hours and locations are posted on our website and updated regularly.

Policy Update

In my first six months as Maine's new U.S. Senator, I have co-sponsored over 50 pieces of legislation and introduced several bills with colleagues from across the aisle.

  • The Biomass Thermal Utilization Act, recognizes and promotes the economic and environmental benefits of thermal biomass energy.
  • The Targeted Strike Oversight Reform Act would require that an independent alternative analysis commonly referred to as a "red-term analysis" be conducted if the government is considering the legality or use of targeted lethal force against a known U.S. person.
  • The Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act, introduced with Senators Alexander, Manchin, Burr, Coburn, and Carper, would avert student loan interest rates from doubling at the end of this month and provide a permanent solution to lower and fix interest rates for 100% of newly issued student loans.
