  • Helping with the Adoption Process

    Gretchen and Reegan Rehm contacted Sen. Franken when they ran into delays adopting a baby from Nevada. They had flown to Las Vegas to bring their new baby home only to find out that the hospital was not releasing their baby because he was sick and had to undergo several medical checkups before being discharged. Because their baby was still in the hospital, the Rehms could not file the adoption paperwork necessary bring him home.

  • Providing benefits to same sex spouses

    Linda Ruprecht, a retired federal employee, and her partner married on August 1, 2013. However, they had difficulty determining how Linda could help her partner receive her health care and retirement benefits. The couple attempted to contact the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)-an independent agency that helps manage federal workers' health care and retirement options-with no luck. Linda reached out to Sen. Al Franken's office, which was able to provide Linda with the information she needed.

  • Expedited Decision: Brazil

    Kathleen and Leandro Idiarte contacted Sen. Franken after their decision on Mr. Idiarte's immigrant visa had been held up at the United States Embassy in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Kathleen, a United States Citizen, and Leandro had been living in Brazil with their young daughter, Isabella Marie. An expedited decision in this case was vital, as Isabella needed to come to Minnesota to receive a cochlear implant.
