McKinley: We Need Tax Fairness

Washington, DC– Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) called for tax fairness for all Americans and more accountability from the IRS today. As of 2013, Americans spend more than 6 billion hours and as much as $378 billion filing their taxes each year; they deserve a fairer, simpler tax code that fits their lives.

American taxpayers also deserve a government that is not unfairly targeting them because of their political views. Today, Rep. McKinley supported a number of bills, including H.R. 1058, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act, to ensure accountability and transparency at the IRS.

The political targeting of tea party groups by the IRS is shameful and safeguards must be put in place to ensure it does not happen again. These bills will begin the process of restoring trust, and increasing transparency, fairness, and accountability,” McKinley said.

Tomorrow, the House will vote to repeal the death tax, also known as the estate tax, which is a 40% tax on money passed to a family member – money that has been taxed at least once already when it was first earned.

We need tax fairness. West Virginia families should have peace of mind that the money they earn can serve their children and grandchildren, not be taken by Uncle Sam. Repealing the unfair death tax is a common-sense reform to ensure the government does not take one more dollar than it deserves,” said McKinley.
