McKinley Votes to Reform No Child Left Behind

Washington, DC– Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) voted today to modernize federal education policy and reform the burdensome testing mandates of “No Child Left Behind.” H.R. 5, The Student Success Act, will empower parents and local officials by reducing federal overreach.

We have listened to parents, teachers, and education officials throughout West Virginia about the lack of flexibility from federal regulations,”said McKinley. “By ending Common Core mandates, returning control to states and school boards, and allowing parents to opt-out of burdensome tests, this bill will give every student the chance to succeed they deserve.”

Rep. McKinley had two amendments added to the bill on the House floor. Watch Rep. McKinley discuss the amendments on the House floor hereand here.

“Voting against this would have meant endorsing current policy. But with 1 in 5 students dropping out of high school, only 26% of high school seniors proficient in math, and just 38% of seniors proficient in reading, the status quo has failed and must be replaced. Today we have begun the journey to turn our system around and get our states and families more engaged,” said McKinley.
