McKinley Statement on US-Iran Negotiations

Washington, DC– Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) released the following statement regarding the ongoing United States-Iran negotiations:

“The framework of a deal agreed to by Secretary of State Kerry yesterday raises more questions than it answers and gives the world less certainty than before. The deal calls for the majority of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure to remain intact and does not significantly delay its breakout capability.

“As Prime Minister Netanyahu pointed out in his speech before Congress in March, leaving Iran’s nuclear infrastructure intact means they will remain a threat to the region and to one of our greatest allies, Israel.

“Iran has lied to inspectors and maintained secret nuclear facilities for decades, why would we trust them now? Iran continues to deny Israel’s right to exist, why should we trust they are now interested in peace?

“If this agreement calls for ending sanctions imposed by Congress, President Obama should come to Congress to lift them. But perhaps, once again, he plans to use executive actions to circumvent Congress. Instead of trying to build his legacy, President Obama should be pursuing a deal to ensure peace in the Middle East, the protection of our allies, and peace of mind for America.”
